Broken Toilet Flange & Crumbling Cast Iron Pipe Repaired in Burleson, TX

A broken toilet flange rarely announces itself. Most homeowners call about something that seems minor — a toilet that rocks, a faint odor, or a toilet that just needs to be reset — and the real problem only shows up once the toilet comes off the floor. Below are two recent jobs where Don found a broken flange with a failing drain pipe underneath it: one in Crowley, one in Burleson.

September 2026 — A Toilet Reset That Went Through the Slab in Crowley

A homeowner in Crowley called because their toilet needed to be reset. When Don pulled the toilet, the flange was broken — and the pipe it connected to needed replacing too. On a slab foundation, that pipe runs down into the concrete, so there was no way to reach it from the floor surface.

  • Pulled the toilet and found the broken flange
  • Jackhammered out the concrete around the drain to expose the pipe
  • Replaced the damaged section of drain pipe
  • Installed a new toilet flange on the new pipe

A fresh wax ring on a broken flange would have failed again. Replacing the pipe and the flange together gave the toilet a solid connection to reset onto.

April 2026 — Broken Flange and Crumbling Cast Iron in Burleson

A Burleson homeowner noticed something alarming: the pipe under their toilet was visibly crumbling. What started as a strange odor and a toilet that didn’t feel quite right turned out to be a broken toilet flange paired with a deteriorating cast iron drain pipe.

When Don arrived and pulled the toilet, the problem was clear. The flange was broken, and the cast iron pipe beneath it had corroded from the inside out, leaving crumbling sections that no longer held a proper seal. The drain was also completely stopped up.

  • Removed the broken toilet flange
  • Cut out and replaced the crumbling cast iron pipe section
  • Installed a new toilet flange to restore a proper, sealed connection
  • Unstopped the toilet drain
  • Tested everything to confirm a clean flow and a solid seal

Why Toilet Flanges Break

The toilet flange is the fitting that anchors the toilet to the drain pipe in the floor. It takes stress every time someone sits down or the toilet shifts, and it depends entirely on the pipe beneath it for support. Common reasons a flange fails:

  • The drain pipe underneath weakens or cracks, so the flange loses its footing
  • A toilet that has rocked for months slowly works the flange loose
  • Older flanges corrode or crack with age

Once a flange breaks, the toilet is no longer sealed to the drain. Sewer gas can enter the home, wastewater can seep under the floor, and the toilet itself becomes unstable. A rocking toilet isn’t always a broken flange — sometimes the flange simply sits too high — but it’s always worth checking before it gets worse.

Why Cast Iron Drain Pipes Fail Over Time

Cast iron was the standard drain pipe material in homes built before the 1980s. It’s durable — until it isn’t. Over decades of moisture exposure, the interior corrodes, rusts, and eventually cracks or crumbles. By the time you notice something is off, the damage is often already significant. Common warning signs include:

  • Slow-draining or completely clogged toilets
  • Sewer odors coming from the bathroom floor
  • A toilet that rocks, wobbles, or doesn’t feel stable
  • Visible moisture or staining around the toilet base

If your home was built before the 1980s and you’re seeing any of these signs, have a plumber take a look before a small problem turns into a major repair.

When the Repair Has to Go Through the Concrete

Most South DFW homes sit on a concrete slab, with the drain lines running beneath it. When the damage stops at the flange, it’s a floor-level repair. When the pipe below is broken, the only way to reach it is to open the concrete around the drain. It’s more work, but it’s the difference between fixing the problem and covering it up. Under-slab work is what Dependable does every week — see our under-slab drain line repair for another example.

We have used Dependable Plumbing for years and have ALWAYS had over and above service. This last time was no exception, we called late one evening and they offered to come out then, we put them off until the next day, in less than 2 hours they had completed a laundry list of issues from a washing machine drain that was not draining properly to flushing and repairing our hot water heater. They were courteous, clean and punctual. HIGHLY RECOMMEND them for any of your plumbing needs.

We requested to.have two outside faucets replaced that were constantly leaking. They were able to replace the faucets without having to tear out any of the drywall, so we were extremely thankful. As their name indicates, they’ve been a very dependable contractor for us over the years…..

These guys are the real deal! They came out the same day I called and replace our home water heater. The older gentleman was total sweetheart and even fixed up a toilet that won't stop flushing. This an honest business, great pricing, and hard honest work. I also love that he is local and had been in business for over 30 years!
