Running, Wobbling, or Phantom Flushing? Common Toilet Problems Explained

Running, Wobbling, or Phantom Flushing?
April 23, 2026 — Burleson, TX Toilets are one of the most-used fixtures in any home, and when something goes wrong, the problem rarely fixes itself. A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water a month, a wobbly base can signal hidden damage under your floor, and a worn-out flapper can quietly drive your water bill up week after week. Here are the most common toilet problems we see in North Texas homes — and what they usually mean.

Running Toilet: The Silent Water Waster

A toilet that keeps running long after you flush is almost always a tank issue. The most common culprits are:
  • A worn or warped flapper that no longer seals the flush valve
  • A flush chain that’s too short, too long, or tangled around the flapper
  • A fill valve that won’t shut off at the correct water level
  • A cracked or misaligned overflow tube
Running toilets can waste several gallons an hour — the kind of thing that shows up clearly on the next water bill.

Phantom Flushing

If your toilet suddenly kicks on and refills by itself when no one has touched it, you’re hearing phantom flushing. It almost always points to water slowly leaking from the tank into the bowl, usually through a deteriorated flapper or a worn flush valve seat. Left alone, it can waste as much water as a fully running toilet and often signals that it’s time for a complete tank rebuild.

Wobbly Toilet = Potential Wax Ring Failure

A toilet that rocks or shifts when you sit down is more than annoying — it’s a warning sign. A wobbly toilet usually means one of three things:
  • The wax ring seal has broken down, letting water and sewer gas escape around the base
  • The closet flange or bolts holding the toilet to the floor are loose or corroded
  • The subfloor underneath may already be water-damaged or rotted
Tightening the bolts is a short-term fix at best. A proper repair means pulling the toilet, replacing the wax ring, inspecting the flange, and checking the floor underneath. Our toilet repair service handles all of that in one visit.

Weak Flush or Slow Refill

When a toilet flushes sluggishly or takes forever to refill, the problem is usually mineral buildup in the rim jets, a partially clogged trap, or a fill valve nearing the end of its life. Older toilets with 3.5-gallon tanks often flush poorly simply because the internal parts are worn out — and at that point, replacing the toilet is often cheaper than a full rebuild.

Loose Handle, Chain, and Flapper Problems

If you have to jiggle the handle or hold it down to get a complete flush, the linkage between the handle, chain, and flapper is out of adjustment. These are inexpensive parts, but getting them balanced correctly matters — a chain that’s too tight will hold the flapper open and waste water, while a chain that’s too loose won’t lift it enough for a full flush.

Repair or Replace? How to Decide

A good rule of thumb: if your toilet is under about 10 years old, most problems can be repaired affordably. Replacement usually makes more sense when:
  • The tank or bowl has a visible crack
  • You’re fixing the same issue for the second or third time
  • The toilet is older than 15–20 years and uses far more water per flush than modern models
  • You’re remodeling and want a taller, more comfortable seat height
Modern 1.28-gallon toilets flush better than the old 1.6-gallon models and use a fraction of the water older toilets did, so an upgrade often pays for itself over time. For other fixture upgrades, our plumbing fixtures service covers everything from faucets to toilets.
