Water Heater Not Heating? Faulty Gas Control Valve Replaced in Burleson

May 5, 2026 — Burleson, TX
A homeowner in Burleson called us out after their water heater stopped producing hot water. The gas was on, the pilot was lit, and the temperature dial was set where it had always been — but the water stayed cold no matter how long it sat. Our technician Don traced the problem to a failed gas control valve and replaced it on the same visit, getting hot water flowing again before he left.
What the Gas Control Valve Actually Does
The gas control valve is the brain of a tank-style gas water heater. It senses the temperature of the water inside the tank, decides when the burner needs to fire, opens the gas supply when heat is called for, and shuts everything down safely if it detects a problem. When the valve fails, the burner stays cold even when every other part of the system is working correctly.
On modern units, the same valve also runs the diagnostic status light on the front of the unit. If you’ve ever looked at a newer water heater and seen a small light blinking, that’s the gas valve telling you what’s wrong — the flash count corresponds to a specific fault code printed on the label right next to the dial.
How We Diagnosed the Problem
Don worked through the standard checks first to rule out simpler causes:
- Confirmed the gas supply was on at the meter and at the appliance shutoff
- Verified the pilot was holding steady once lit
- Checked the thermopile output and confirmed it was generating enough voltage to keep the valve open
- Read the status light flash code, which pointed directly at a control valve fault
With the thermopile passing and gas pressure confirmed, the failure was inside the valve itself. The valve wasn’t sending the signal to fire the burner even though the water was well below the temperature setting.
The Repair
Replacing a gas control valve is a careful job. The gas line has to be shut off and bled, the old valve unthreaded from the tank, the thermopile and igniter wiring transferred to the new unit, and every connection sealed and pressure-tested before the burner is relit. After the new valve was installed, Don relit the pilot, ran the heater through a full heating cycle, and confirmed the burner was firing cleanly and the water was reaching the set temperature before he packed up.

Replace the Valve or Replace the Heater?
A failed gas control valve doesn’t automatically mean the water heater is finished. On a tank that’s still inside its expected service life and otherwise in good condition, swapping the valve is usually the right call — you get years more service out of the unit for a fraction of the cost of a full replacement. On a tank that’s already past 10–12 years old, leaking, or showing rust around the burner chamber, replacing the heater outright is usually the smarter long-term move.
We always walk homeowners through both options before any work starts, with honest numbers attached, so you can make the call based on the age and condition of your specific unit. More on our water heater repair and replacement services.
Common Signs Your Gas Control Valve Is Failing
- Pilot lights and stays lit, but the burner never fires
- Status light flashing a fault code instead of the normal slow heartbeat pattern
- Water never reaches the set temperature even after a long recovery period
- Burner cycles on and off erratically
- Visible damage, corrosion, or a faint gas smell at the valve body — shut off the gas at the appliance and call a plumber immediately
