Washing Machine Drain Backup in Burleson, TX

Near Gardenia Ct, Burleson, TX 76028

July 29, 2026 — Burleson, TX

A Burleson homeowner called this week with a description we hear more often than you would think: water seemed to be coming up out of the floor near the washing machine. That phrasing matters, because in a slab-on-grade town like ours it is the same way people describe a slab leak. In this case it was not one. The washer drain was stopped up, and Don had it cleared the same visit.

Why Laundry Water Looks Like It Comes Up Through the Floor

Your washing machine does not drain by gravity the way a sink does. It pumps. At the end of a cycle the machine forces twenty to forty gallons of water out through a hose in a matter of seconds, and that hose empties into a vertical pipe in the wall called a standpipe.

When the drain below that standpipe is partially blocked, the line cannot swallow water as fast as the pump delivers it. Water backs up the standpipe, spills over the top, and runs down behind the machine onto the floor. From the doorway, all you see is water spreading out from under the washer — which looks exactly like water surfacing from below.

The tell is timing. A laundry drain backup appears during or right after the drain cycle and then stops. A slab leak does not care what appliance is running.

How to Tell a Laundry Drain Clog From a Slab Leak

  • Points to the drain: water shows up only when the washer pumps out, and the floor is dry the rest of the day.
  • Points to the drain: you can hear gurgling from a nearby sink or tub while the machine drains.
  • Points to the drain: the water is soapy, warm from the wash, or carries lint.
  • Points to a leak: a damp or warm patch of floor that never fully dries, with no appliance running.
  • Points to a leak: a water bill that climbs without a change in habits, or the sound of running water with everything shut off.

If the water only ever appears on laundry day, start with the drain. If it is there on a Tuesday morning with the house quiet, that is when we bring out the electronic equipment for slab leak detection.

What Actually Clogs a Laundry Drain

Laundry lines take a beating that other drains do not. Lint escapes the machine on every load and coats the inside of the pipe. Detergent and fabric softener residue give it something to stick to. Over years that buildup narrows the line until it can no longer keep up with a fast pump-out — which is why these clogs almost never announce themselves gradually. The drain works fine for a decade and then overflows twice in one week.

Older Burleson homes add a second factor: many laundry lines here are original to the house, tie into the main at a long horizontal run, and were never sized generously to begin with. A modern high-capacity washer moves considerably more water per cycle than the machine that line was built for.

What Don Did on This Call

Don confirmed the source first, which is the step that gets skipped most often. He ran the washer through a drain cycle and watched the standpipe fill and overflow — that alone ruled out a supply-side leak, since the floor stayed dry until the pump kicked on. He then cleared the stoppage in the laundry line, ran the machine again through a full drain cycle, and confirmed the standpipe took the whole volume without backing up. No concrete opened, no drywall cut.

Two Things Worth Skipping

Chemical drain cleaner is the usual first move, and it is a poor fit here. Those products are formulated for hair and grease, not compacted lint and detergent film, and they tend to sit in the low spot of a horizontal laundry run doing nothing but working on the pipe itself. On older galvanized or cast iron lines that is a real risk.

The second is running another load to see if it clears on its own. It will not, and each cycle sends another thirty gallons onto a floor that may sit over a wood subfloor or against a baseboard. Stop using the machine and get the line cleared.

We have used Dependable Plumbing for years and have ALWAYS had over and above service. This last time was no exception, we called late one evening and they offered to come out then, we put them off until the next day, in less than 2 hours they had completed a laundry list of issues from a washing machine drain that was not draining properly to flushing and repairing our hot water heater. They were courteous, clean and punctual. HIGHLY RECOMMEND them for any of your plumbing needs.

We requested to.have two outside faucets replaced that were constantly leaking. They were able to replace the faucets without having to tear out any of the drywall, so we were extremely thankful. As their name indicates, they’ve been a very dependable contractor for us over the years…..

These guys are the real deal! They came out the same day I called and replace our home water heater. The older gentleman was total sweetheart and even fixed up a toilet that won't stop flushing. This an honest business, great pricing, and hard honest work. I also love that he is local and had been in business for over 30 years!
