Ice Maker Supply Line Repair — Find the Leak & Fix It

Water on the floor in front of your refrigerator is one of those problems that seems obvious until you actually try to find the source. Sometimes it’s the ice maker line. Sometimes it’s the door seal. Sometimes it’s a clogged defrost drain. After 40 years of plumbing work in Burleson, I’ve traced a lot of mystery refrigerator leaks — and the ice maker supply line is the culprit roughly 60% of the time.
Here’s how to figure out where the water is actually coming from, fix the simple stuff yourself, and know when to call.
First — Where’s the Water Actually Coming From?
Before you replace anything, figure out the source. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall about a foot (carefully — they’re heavy) and check these in order:
- The ice maker supply line itself — visible behind the fridge, runs from the wall to the bottom-back of the refrigerator. Look for wet spots along the line, drips at either connection, cracks or kinks, mineral buildup, or green corrosion on copper.
- The shut-off valve in the wall or floor — usually a saddle valve or compression valve where the line taps into a cold water pipe. These leak often.
- The water inlet valve on the refrigerator — the small electric valve at the bottom-back of the fridge where the supply line connects. A failing one drips even when the ice maker isn’t running.
- The defrost drain — inside the freezer, a drain tube carries water down to a drip pan. If it clogs (food debris, ice plug), water backs up and spills out the front.
- The drip pan — at the very bottom of the fridge, slides out from behind a kick plate. If it’s cracked, water meant to evaporate ends up on the floor.
- The door gasket — if the seal isn’t tight, warm humid air gets in, condenses inside, and drips out.
Identifying which one is leaking saves you from replacing the wrong thing.
Ice Maker Supply Line — The Most Common Culprit
Once you’ve confirmed it’s the supply line, you’ve got three sub-problems:
- Leak at the wall valve — the saddle valve or compression valve is failing
- Leak along the line itself — pinhole, crack, or kink
- Leak at the refrigerator end — connection at the fridge or the inlet valve
The most common: leak at the wall valve, especially if it’s a saddle valve. Those are notorious for failing within a few years and should be replaced with a proper quarter-turn ball valve when possible.
DIY: Replacing an Ice Maker Supply Line
Tools you’ll need:
- Adjustable wrench
- New ice maker supply line (material guidance below)
- Towel and bucket
Steps:
- Shut off the water supply at the valve where the line taps into a cold water pipe (under the sink, in the basement, or wherever the cold line is tapped). If you can’t find a dedicated shutoff, shut off the main water at the meter.
- Disconnect the line from the refrigerator — usually a compression fitting at the bottom-back of the fridge.
- Disconnect from the wall valve — also typically a compression fitting.
- Remove the old line from behind the fridge.
- Route the new line the same way the old one went. Leave 3–4 feet of slack so the fridge can be pulled out for future service.
- Connect at the wall end first — make sure the compression nut and ferrule are properly seated. Don’t overtighten.
- Connect at the refrigerator end — same approach.
- Turn the water on slowly and check both connections for drips.
- Push the refrigerator back without kinking the line.
- Wait 24 hours before assuming the ice maker is working — first batch of ice usually takes a full day.
Choose Your Line: Copper, Stainless Braided, or Plastic?
Three options, ranked from best to worst:
1. Stainless steel braided supply line — My recommendation. Flexible, durable, doesn’t kink, resists corrosion, lasts decades. Costs $15–$25. The clear winner for most homes.
2. Copper tubing — Traditional, durable, and rigid (which is both a pro and a con). Requires careful routing but will outlast the refrigerator. Costs $15–$30 depending on length. The “old reliable” option.
3. Plastic (polyethylene) tubing — Don’t use it. This is what came with cheap supply kits 20 years ago and what’s still in a lot of older homes. It cracks, kinks, and develops pinhole leaks.
If your current line is white or clear plastic, that’s a leak waiting to happen. Replace it preventively before it dumps water all over your floor.
Other Refrigerator Water Sources (Not the Supply Line)
If the supply line checks out, look elsewhere:
- Clogged defrost drain: Symptom is water pooling INSIDE the freezer or fridge before reaching the floor. Thaw the drain with hot water from a turkey baster.
- Cracked drip pan: Pull out the kick plate at the bottom of the fridge. If you see a cracked plastic pan, replace it (appliance parts website or local shop).
- Failed door seal: Run a dollar bill under the closed door. If you can pull it out easily, the seal is shot. Replace the gasket.
- Defrost cycle overflowing: Usually a sign of a clogged defrost drain backing up.
If none of these are obvious, you may be looking at a failed inlet valve on the refrigerator itself — that’s an appliance repair, not a plumbing repair.
When to Call a Plumber
Call us if:
- The wall valve is corroded and won’t come off
- The line runs through walls or cabinets and you can’t access both ends easily
- There’s a leak in the cold water line itself behind the valve
- You see signs of long-term water damage in the cabinet or floor
- You’re not comfortable working with compression fittings
- You’re installing a brand-new line to a refrigerator that’s never had one (involves tapping into a cold water line)
New Refrigerator? Connecting the Water Line
If you just bought a new fridge and need to hook up the water line, the process is:
- Locate a cold water line (usually under the kitchen sink)
- Install a quarter-turn ball valve at the tap point (not a saddle valve — those fail)
- Run a new stainless braided line from the valve to the back of the fridge
- Connect both ends, turn on the water, check for leaks
If you don’t already have an ice maker line tap, this involves cutting into a cold water line. Honest territory for a handy homeowner with the right tools, but most folks call a plumber and the whole job is usually under an hour.
