Common Garbage Disposal Problems We Fix
Disposal Hums But Won’t Spin
A disposal that hums when switched on but doesn’t grind has a jammed impeller plate — something hard got caught between the plate and the grind ring and the motor stalled. The motor is still trying to run (hence the hum) but the plate is locked. If left running it will trip the internal overload protector.
This is often fixable without a service call — see the DIY section below for how to use the hex wrench at the bottom of the unit to free the jam. If the jam clears but the disposal still won’t start, the reset button needs to be pressed after the jam is freed. If neither works, call us.
Disposal Is Completely Dead — No Sound at All
A disposal with no response when switched on has either tripped its internal reset button, tripped the circuit breaker at the panel, or has a failed switch or wiring issue. Check the reset button on the bottom of the unit first — it pops out when the overload protector trips and needs to be pushed back in. If the reset button doesn’t fix it, check the circuit breaker. If both are fine and the disposal still doesn’t respond, the switch or the unit itself may have failed.
Disposal Trips the Reset Button Repeatedly
A disposal that runs briefly and then trips its overload protector repeatedly is either struggling with a partial jam, has worn grinding components that are drawing too much current, or has a failing motor. On older units — anything more than 8 to 10 years old — repeated tripping usually means the motor is wearing out and replacement makes more sense than repair. We’ll tell you honestly which situation you’re in.
Disposal Leaking
Disposal leaks have three common locations, each with a different cause:
Leak at the top (sink flange) — The mounting flange at the sink drain has lost its putty seal. This requires removing the disposal, cleaning and reseating the flange with fresh plumber’s putty, and reinstalling.
Leak at the side (dishwasher connection) — The dishwasher drain hose connection on the side of the disposal has a loose clamp or a cracked fitting. Usually a quick fix.
Leak at the bottom — Water coming from the bottom of the disposal body means the internal seals have failed. This is not repairable — the unit needs replacement.
Disposal Grinds Poorly or Makes Unusual Noises
A disposal that used to grind well but now struggles, leaves food chunks, or makes rattling, grinding, or metallic noises has either worn grinding components or a hard object lodged in the grind chamber. We check for foreign objects first — bones, fruit pits, small utensils, and bottle caps are common culprits. If the chamber is clear and grinding is still poor, the impeller plate and grind ring have worn down and replacement is usually the more cost-effective path.
Persistent Odor
A disposal that smells even after running has food debris accumulated in the grind chamber, under the splash guard, and in the drain connection. This is a cleaning issue rather than a mechanical failure — see the cleaning section below for how to address it. If the odor persists after cleaning, the drain line downstream of the disposal may have buildup that needs clearing.

How to Clear a Jammed Disposal
Turn off and unplug the disposal first. Never put your hand inside a disposal — even when it’s off. Use tongs or pliers to remove any visible objects from the drain opening above.
Look at the bottom of the disposal for the hex socket — it’s a 1/4-inch Allen wrench opening in the center. Insert a 1/4-inch hex wrench and turn it back and forth to manually rotate the impeller plate and free the jam. Most disposals come with a wrench for this purpose. If you don’t have one, a standard Allen wrench from a hardware set works.
Once the plate moves freely, remove the hex wrench, plug the disposal back in, and press the reset button on the bottom of the unit — it should click when seated.
Run water, then turn the disposal on. If it runs normally, the jam is cleared. If it hums but doesn’t spin, there may still be an object blocking the plate — repeat the hex wrench step.

Garbage Disposal Cleaning — DIY
Regular cleaning prevents odor buildup and keeps the disposal working efficiently. Here are two effective methods:
Ice and Rock Salt Method
Fill the disposal chamber with ice cubes.
Pour one cup of rock salt over the ice.
Run cold water and turn the disposal on.
Let it grind until the ice is gone. The ice and salt scour the grind chamber walls and impeller plate, loosening built-up debris and grease.
Baking Soda and Lemon Method
Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda into the disposal followed by 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Let it fizz for a few minutes.
Flush with hot water while running the disposal.
For ongoing odor control, run lemon or lime peels through the disposal periodically — citrus oils neutralize odors effectively and leave the drain smelling fresh.
Cleaning the Splash Guard
The rubber splash guard — the black flap in the drain opening — accumulates grease and debris on its underside and is a major source of disposal odors. Pull back the flaps and scrub the underside with a dish brush and dish soap. This is often the most effective single step for eliminating disposal odor.
Garbage Disposal Replacement and Installation
When a disposal is leaking from the body, the motor is failing, or the unit is old enough that repair doesn’t make sense — replacement is the right call. A new disposal installs in about an hour in most cases. We carry replacement units on the truck for common configurations.
If you need guidance on which unit to buy, we’re happy to advise. A few general principles:
Motor size — For typical household use, a 1/2 HP unit handles everyday food scraps adequately. For heavier use or larger households, 3/4 HP or 1 HP units are more durable and significantly quieter.
Insulation — Better units have sound insulation around the motor housing. If noise is a concern, it’s worth spending a bit more on a quieter model.
Brand — InSinkErator and Waste King are the two brands we work with most and recommend. Both have good parts availability and reliable track records.

How long should a garbage disposal last?
A quality disposal used normally should last 10 to 15 years. Disposals that handle harder items — bones, fibrous vegetables, fruit pits — wear faster. If your disposal is more than 10 years old and starting to have problems, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair.
Can I put bones and fruit pits in the disposal?
Small soft bones like chicken bones are generally fine and can actually help clean the grind chamber. Hard items like large bones, fruit pits, and shellfish shells will damage or jam most residential disposals and should go in the trash. Fibrous items like celery, artichoke leaves, and corn husks can wrap around the impeller plate and should also be avoided.
Is it worth repairing a disposal or should I just replace it?
For a jam or a reset issue, repair is always worth trying first — these are often free fixes. For a leak at the sink flange on a disposal that’s otherwise in good shape, a remount is worth doing. For a leak from the body, a motor that keeps tripping, or a unit that’s more than 10 years old and grinding poorly — replacement makes more economic sense. We’ll give you a straight answer when we look at it.
How long does it take to install a new garbage disposal?
About an hour for a straightforward replacement when the existing connections are in good shape. If the old unit was hardwired and the new one needs a plug-in connection (or vice versa), or if the drain plumbing needs adjustment to accommodate a different-sized unit, that can add some time. We’ll give you a realistic estimate when you describe what you have.
