Don’t Pour Grease Down the Drain — It’s a Mistake That Costs Homeowners

It seems harmless enough — rinsing a greasy pan under hot water, or sliding it straight into the dishwasher after dinner. But if grease is still on that pan, you’re sending it right into your drain. And once it gets in there, it doesn’t stay liquid for long.

Why Grease Is So Damaging to Your Pipes

Cooking grease, fat, and oil may be liquid when hot, but they solidify as they cool inside your drain lines. Over time, they coat pipe walls, trap food debris, and build into stubborn blockages that hot water alone won’t clear.
  • Bacon drippings, butter, meat fats, and cooking oils are the most common culprits
  • Buildup can occur under the sink, in the P-trap, or deep in the sewer line
  • Every greasy rinse adds another layer — the problem compounds quietly over months

The Two Habits That Catch Homeowners Off Guard

Most people know not to pour a jar of bacon grease directly down the sink. But two everyday habits send just as much grease into your plumbing without anyone realizing it:
  • Rinsing greasy pans in the sink. Even a quick rinse with dish soap sends a film of grease into the drain. Hot water keeps it moving just long enough to enter the pipes — then it cools and sticks to the walls.
  • Loading greasy dishes into the dishwasher without wiping them first. Dishwashers drain into the same household lines. All that grease has to go somewhere, and it ends up coating the inside of your pipes with every cycle.

What to Do Instead

A few simple habits protect your drain lines and save you from an expensive service call down the road:
  • Let grease cool and solidify in the pan, then scrape it into the trash
  • Wipe pans and dishes with a paper towel before washing or loading them into the dishwasher
  • Pour excess cooking oil into a sealable container and toss it in the trash
  • Use a sink strainer to catch food particles that mix with grease and speed up buildup

Signs You May Already Have a Grease Problem

If grease has been making its way into your drain lines regularly, you may already be seeing the warning signs:
  • Slow draining in the kitchen sink
  • Gurgling sounds after water goes down
  • Clogs that keep coming back shortly after being cleared
  • Unpleasant odors rising from the drain
These are signs that grease has built up enough to restrict flow — and that a professional cleaning is likely needed before things get worse. Learn more about our drain cleaning services and our under-sink repair services.

We have used Dependable Plumbing for years and have ALWAYS had over and above service. This last time was no exception, we called late one evening and they offered to come out then, we put them off until the next day, in less than 2 hours they had completed a laundry list of issues from a washing machine drain that was not draining properly to flushing and repairing our hot water heater. They were courteous, clean and punctual. HIGHLY RECOMMEND them for any of your plumbing needs.

We requested to.have two outside faucets replaced that were constantly leaking. They were able to replace the faucets without having to tear out any of the drywall, so we were extremely thankful. As their name indicates, they’ve been a very dependable contractor for us over the years…..

These guys are the real deal! They came out the same day I called and replace our home water heater. The older gentleman was total sweetheart and even fixed up a toilet that won't stop flushing. This an honest business, great pricing, and hard honest work. I also love that he is local and had been in business for over 30 years!
