- It puts weight and leverage on the connection. A charged hose is heavy, and a coiled hose pulls sideways on the spout. Over years that works the fixture loose where it enters the wall and stresses the solder joint behind the siding.

The Repair
Don shut off the water, removed the old fixture, cleaned up the threads on the stub-out, and installed a new brass hose bib sealed properly against the wall. He pressurized the line, ran the faucet through several full open-and-close cycles, and checked the siding and the interior wall for any sign of residual moisture before wrapping up. The whole thing was a single-visit outside faucet repair.
On homes that do not already have one, this is also the natural moment to step up to a frost-free model, since the fixture is coming off the wall anyway. On this job the existing configuration was the right fit, so a like-for-like brass replacement was the honest call.
Getting More Life Out of the Next One
- Disconnect the hose when you are not actively using it, and always before a hard freeze.
- Shut the faucet off at the handle rather than relying on the nozzle to hold back pressure.
- Once a month, walk out and look at the spigot with the hose off — a drip you can see is a drip you can fix cheaply.
- Watch for a green or soggy patch at the foundation line during dry stretches.
- Support a heavy coiled hose on a reel or hanger instead of letting it hang off the spout.
If a spigot is already weeping, spraying from the handle, or refusing to close all the way, replacement is almost always the better value than chasing it with washers — the valve seat is usually the part that has worn, and that is not something a new washer fixes.
