Hot Water Slab Leak — Signs, Tests, and Repair Options From a 40-Year DFW Plumber

Of all the slab leaks I get called for in Burleson, the hot water ones come up most often. That’s not a coincidence — hot water lines fail before cold water lines almost every time. After 40 years of locating and repairing slab leaks in DFW, I can usually guess which line is leaking before I even get the equipment out.

If you’re reading this because you think you might have a hot water slab leak, the short version is: don’t wait. Hot water under a slab loses heat into the concrete, which means you’re paying to heat the floor. The damage adds up fast — to your water heater, your foundation, and your bill.

Here’s everything I tell homeowners who call worried about it.

What Makes Hot Water Lines More Vulnerable

A few reasons hot lines tend to fail first:

  • Heat accelerates corrosion. Hot water reacts faster with copper than cold. Every chemical reaction happens faster at higher temperatures.
  • Electrolysis is worse on hot lines. If your home’s electrical system is grounded to the copper plumbing (older homes especially), stray current literally eats away at the pipe — and the hot line takes more of the damage.
  • Thermal expansion and contraction. Hot lines expand and contract every time water flows. Over decades, that movement stresses every bend and joint.
  • Mineral buildup is more aggressive on hot lines. DFW has hard water, and minerals precipitate out faster when heated — that’s why your water heater scales up and why hot lines develop pinholes.
  • Installation damage shows up sooner. A small dent in a copper line during construction becomes a leak faster on the hot side than the cold.

Bottom line: if you have copper supply lines under a DFW slab and they’re more than 25 years old, the hot line is the one to watch.

Signs of a Hot Water Slab Leak (vs. a Cold One)

Some symptoms of a slab leak are universal, but a few specifically point to the hot line:

  • Warm or hot spots on the floor — especially noticeable on tile or vinyl. Walk around barefoot in the morning before anyone has used water. An unexplained warm spot is suspicious.
  • Water heater running constantly — if it’s trying to keep up with water silently disappearing into the slab, it’ll cycle far more than normal.
  • Lower hot water pressure than cold at the same fixture.
  • Sound of running water when everything is off, especially near floor level on the side of the house where the water heater is.
  • High gas or electric bills alongside the high water bill — your heater is working overtime.
  • Warm concrete in the garage if the hot line runs out to an outside fixture.
  • Damp or warm baseboards if the leak migrates sideways before surfacing.

A cold water slab leak shows the same wet-floor symptoms but without the heat signature. If you’re noticing temperature, it’s almost certainly the hot side.

The Homeowner Test You Can Do Right Now

Before you call anyone:

  1. Turn off every fixture in the house — every faucet, washing machine, dishwasher, ice maker.
  2. Make sure the toilets aren’t running (jiggle the handles).
  3. Walk to your water meter at the curb and look at the small flow indicator (usually a tiny triangle or red gear).
  4. If the indicator is turning, water is moving somewhere. With everything off above the slab, that means it’s leaking below.
  5. To narrow it down further, shut off the cold water inlet to your water heater and wait 10–15 minutes. Recheck the meter. If the indicator stops, your leak is on the hot side.

Takes about 15 minutes total and tells you most of what a plumber needs to know.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait

A hot water slab leak is not a “fix it next month” problem. Every day it continues:

  • Heated water is being lost — your water heater works overtime, your bills climb
  • The leak typically gets worse, not better — pinholes erode wider
  • Water under the slab can soften the soil underneath, contributing to foundation movement
  • Eventually water finds its way to the surface — through cracks in the slab, up into baseboards, through carpet
  • Mold and mildew become a real risk once moisture reaches drywall

I’ve seen slab leaks that were ignored for 6+ months and the repair was straightforward. I’ve also seen ones that caused real foundation issues. You don’t know which kind you have until you look.

Repair vs. Reroute — Your Two Real Options

Once a hot water slab leak is located, there are two basic ways to fix it:

Option 1: Break the slab and repair the leak in place. Jackhammer through the concrete at the leak location, cut out the damaged section, splice in new pipe, pressure-test, and pour the concrete back. Best when the pipe is otherwise in good condition and the leak is a single localized failure.

Option 2: Abandon the under-slab line and reroute. Cap off the leaking line at both ends and run a new hot water supply line through the attic, walls, or along a different path. Best when the pipe is corroded enough that repairing one spot just means another leak in six months. Often the smarter long-term choice on older copper.

I can’t give a real price without seeing the leak, but for general budgeting in the DFW area:

  • Slab leak detection alone: Lower three figures for a typical residential locate
  • Detection + spot repair (break the slab, repair, pour back): Mid-three to low-four figures depending on access, depth, and finished flooring
  • Reroute (abandon under-slab line, run new line overhead): Often comparable to spot repair, sometimes less, depending on the route

Beware of anyone quoting a flat number sight-unseen — they’re either padding to cover the unknown, or they’ll tack on charges once they start.
