Finding a good plumber feels easy until you actually need one. The water heater’s leaking on a Saturday night, or there’s a stain spreading across the ceiling that wasn’t there yesterday, and suddenly you’re scrolling Google trying to make a $500 decision in twenty minutes.

I’ve been a plumber in Burleson since 1985. In that time I’ve been called out to clean up after a lot of bad work — homeowners who picked the cheapest quote, the first ad they saw, or a name from a stack of door hangers. 1. Verify the Texas Plumber License First

This is the easiest check and the one most people skip. In Texas, every plumbing company must have a licensed Master Plumber or Responsible Master Plumber, and that license number should appear on their truck, their business cards, and their website.

You can look up any Texas plumber license at the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. A real license means the plumber passed exams, carries insurance, and is accountable to a state board if something goes wrong.

If a plumber can’t quickly tell you their license number when you ask, that’s all you need to know.

A 5.0 rating across 12 reviews is less trustworthy than a 4.5 across 100. Look for:

Specific details — names, neighborhoods, the actual repair described. Generic praise is suspicious.
A mix of ratings — every business has had a bad day. Sites with only 5-star reviews are usually filtered.
Owner responses — does the plumber engage with feedback or ignore it?
Recent reviews — a review from 2018 doesn’t tell you anything about today’s crew.

3. Ask What They Specialize In

Discount that requires signing today — real prices don’t expire in two hours.
The truck has no company name or license number on it.

Any one of these on its own might be explainable. Two or more and I’d thank them politely and call someone else.
