Tank-to-Bowl Gasket Replacement — Crowley, TX Toilet Repair

Near Meadowlark Cir, Crowley, TX 76036

On 11/08/2022, we got a call from a homeowner in Crowley about a small but persistent leak from their toilet. Water was dripping from underneath the tank, right where it met the bowl — a small wet ring on the floor that kept reappearing no matter how many times they wiped it up.

This is a classic tank-to-bowl gasket leak. It’s one of the easier toilet repairs, but it’s also one where DIYers sometimes get into trouble. Here’s how we handled it.

The Symptoms

The homeowner described:

  • Water dripping from the joint between the tank and the bowl
  • Wet ring on the floor at the back of the toilet
  • Some corrosion visible on the tank-to-bowl bolts
  • The leak got worse right after each flush

All consistent with a tank-to-bowl gasket failure.

What a Tank-to-Bowl Gasket Is

A two-piece toilet (tank sitting on top of the bowl) has two main seal points where they meet:

  1. The tank-to-bowl gasket — a thick rubber donut between the bottom of the tank and the top of the bowl, around the flush valve opening
  2. The tank-to-bowl bolts — two long bolts that go through the bottom of the tank and into holes in the bowl, with rubber washers under the bolt heads

Both can leak. Usually they fail together because the same age and water exposure that hardens the gasket also corrodes the bolts.

Diagnosing It Specifically

To confirm a tank-to-bowl gasket leak vs. another type of toilet leak, we:

  1. Dried everything completely with a towel
  2. Flushed the toilet
  3. Watched where the first new drips appeared

Water came down from between the tank and bowl, traveled along the underside of the tank, and dripped onto the floor at the back of the toilet. Confirmed gasket leak.

If water had come from the supply line connection, it would have shown up at the side of the tank near where the supply enters. If it had come from the base of the toilet (wax ring), it would show up in front of the toilet, not behind. For the full toilet leak diagnostic guide, see our toilet leaks post.

The Repair

Tank-to-bowl gasket replacement is straightforward but takes care:

  1. Shut off the water at the angle stop
  2. Flushed the toilet and sponged out the remaining tank water
  3. Disconnected the supply line from the bottom of the tank
  4. Removed the old tank-to-bowl bolts from inside the tank (they came out easier than expected — sometimes they’re corroded and won’t budge)
  5. Lifted the tank off the bowl (heavier than most people expect — about 40 lbs of porcelain, awkward to maneuver)
  6. Removed the old gasket from the bottom of the tank
  7. Installed the new gasket — universal kit, $15 part
  8. Installed new tank-to-bowl bolts and washers (always replace both)
  9. Set the tank back onto the bowl, centered on the new gasket
  10. Hand-tightened the bolts evenly, then carefully torqued them just enough to compress the gasket — NOT cranked down. Overtightening cracks porcelain tanks.
  11. Reconnected the supply line, turned water on, tested

No leaks. About 30 minutes start to finish.

Why Tank-to-Bowl Gaskets Fail

Tank-to-bowl gaskets are rubber. Rubber:

  • Hardens over years under constant water contact
  • Loses elasticity especially in DFW’s hard water
  • Gets damaged by in-tank cleaners — those blue tablets kill flappers AND gaskets
  • Compresses permanently under bolt pressure, eventually past the point where it can seal

Most tank-to-bowl gaskets last 15–25 years. Original gaskets on cheap builder-grade toilets sometimes fail much sooner — 10 years isn’t unusual.

The bolts have their own failure mode: rubber washers under the bolt heads dry out, and the bolts themselves corrode. When the bolts are bad, they leak around the bolt holes — a separate leak from the gasket itself.

Can You DIY This?

Yes, but with caveats.

It’s DIY-friendly because:

  • The kit is $15 at any hardware store
  • No special tools required, just a wrench
  • Universal kits fit most modern toilets

It can go wrong if:

  • You overtighten the bolts and crack the porcelain tank ($$$ — usually means replacing the whole toilet)
  • You don’t center the tank on the gasket properly (continues to leak)
  • The old bolts are corroded and won’t come out (sometimes you have to cut them off)
  • You drop the tank — 40 lbs of porcelain falling is bad news

If you’ve never lifted a toilet tank before, this is a reasonable first DIY plumbing project as long as you take your time. Have a helper for the tank lift.

When to Call Instead

Call if:

  • You’ve started the repair and can’t get the old bolts out
  • You’re not confident lifting the tank without dropping it
  • You see cracks in the porcelain anywhere
  • The bolts won’t tighten because the porcelain holes are damaged
  • You’ve replaced the gasket and it still leaks (could be a cracked flush valve or warped tank)

A Word From Don

Tank-to-bowl gasket leaks are slow and persistent — the kind of thing easy to ignore for months. But the slow drip ruins the floor, swells the subfloor, and eventually causes real damage. If you see water at the back of your toilet, get it diagnosed.

If you’re handy, it’s a Saturday morning repair. If not, give us a call. We service Burleson, Crowley, and the surrounding South DFW area for jobs like this every week.

We have used Dependable Plumbing for years and have ALWAYS had over and above service. This last time was no exception, we called late one evening and they offered to come out then, we put them off until the next day, in less than 2 hours they had completed a laundry list of issues from a washing machine drain that was not draining properly to flushing and repairing our hot water heater. They were courteous, clean and punctual. HIGHLY RECOMMEND them for any of your plumbing needs.

We requested to.have two outside faucets replaced that were constantly leaking. They were able to replace the faucets without having to tear out any of the drywall, so we were extremely thankful. As their name indicates, they’ve been a very dependable contractor for us over the years…..

These guys are the real deal! They came out the same day I called and replace our home water heater. The older gentleman was total sweetheart and even fixed up a toilet that won't stop flushing. This an honest business, great pricing, and hard honest work. I also love that he is local and had been in business for over 30 years!
