What a Rocking, Leaking Toilet Usually Means

A toilet that wobbles and seeps water around its base is almost never a random problem. In most cases it points to one of a few related issues:

A failed wax seal between the toilet and the floor flange, which lets water escape with every flush.
Loose or corroded closet bolts that no longer hold the toilet tight to the floor.
An uneven or unsupported base that lets the toilet shift and break the seal over time.
A damaged or low flange that keeps the seal from doing its job.

Once that seal is broken, water works its way under the toilet on every flush — often unnoticed until it stains the floor, warps the subfloor, or leaves a smell behind.

How Don Reset the Toilet

Don removed the toilet, cleaned the old wax off the flange, and inspected the flange and bolts to make sure they were solid. He installed a fresh seal, reset the toilet onto the flange, leveled and secured it so it no longer rocked, and re-tightened everything before testing.
