Why Is My Water Heater Making a Popping Noise?

If your water heater has started making a popping, rumbling, or cracking noise, you’re not imagining things — and you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common calls we get from homeowners in Burleson and across the DFW area. The good news: it’s usually explainable. The better news: it’s often fixable before it becomes a bigger problem.

The Most Likely Cause: Sediment Buildup

In North Texas, hard water is a fact of life. Over time, minerals like calcium and magnesium settle at the bottom of your water heater tank and form a layer of sediment. When your water heater fires up to heat the water, that sediment gets disturbed — and the popping or rumbling you hear is steam bubbles pushing up through it.

Think of it like a pot of oatmeal boiling on the stove. The thick layer at the bottom traps heat and causes pops and burbles. Same idea.

What Sediment Buildup Actually Does to Your Water Heater

It’s not just annoying — sediment buildup causes real problems over time:

  • Reduced efficiency. Your unit has to work harder to heat water through a layer of mineral buildup, which drives up your energy bill.
  • Shorter lifespan. That extra strain adds wear on the tank and heating elements.
  • Overheating. Sediment can cause hot spots at the bottom of the tank, which may eventually lead to tank failure or leaks.
  • Discolored or cloudy water. Heavy sediment can start affecting water quality at the tap.

Could It Be Something Else?

Sediment is the most common culprit, but not the only one. A popping or ticking noise can also come from:

  • Expansion and contraction. Metal pipes and the tank itself expand when heated and contract when they cool. This can produce ticking or popping sounds that are completely normal.
  • A failing heating element. On electric water heaters, a deteriorating element can sometimes produce similar sounds.
  • Pressure fluctuations. Unusual sounds combined with inconsistent hot water temperatures can point to a pressure issue worth having inspected.

When Should You Call a Plumber?

A little noise on its own isn’t always an emergency. But it’s worth calling a plumber if you notice any of the following alongside the sound:

  • You’re running out of hot water faster than usual
  • Your energy bills have gone up without explanation
  • You see moisture, rust, or corrosion around the base of the unit
  • The water heater is more than 8–10 years old
  • The noise has gotten noticeably louder over time

Any of those signs alongside the popping means the problem is progressing — and catching it early is always cheaper than dealing with a failed tank.

What a Plumber Will Do

If sediment buildup is the cause, a plumber can flush the tank to clear out the mineral deposits. Depending on the age and condition of the unit, they may also recommend a full water heater replacement — especially if the tank is older or showing signs of wear. Flushing a tank that’s already corroded can sometimes do more harm than good, and an honest evaluation from a plumber will tell you which direction makes more sense.
